    Author: BOURKE CHRIS

Bringing to life the musical worlds of New Zealanders both at home and out on the town, this history chronicles the evolution of popular music in New Zealand during the 20th century. From the kiwi concert parties during World War I and the arrival of jazz to the rise of swing, country, the Hawaiian sound, and then rock'n'roll, this musical investigation brings to life the people, places, and sounds of a world that has disappeared and uncovers how music from the rest of the world was shaped by Maori and Pakeha New Zealanders into a melody, rhythm, and voice that made sense on these islands. The accompanying audio CD wonderfully brings to life the engaging text, underscoring seminal moments in New Zealand's musical history.

Title: Complete Piano Sonatas of Beethoven 14 Cd Set & Book
Author: HOUSTON MICHAEL & BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN

Michael Houstoun is not only New Zealand’s foremost Beethoven pianist, he ranks among the great Beethoven pianists of our age. He celebrated his 60th birthday with an historic cycle of the Beethoven piano sonatas, a body of work that constitutes some of the supreme treasures of human artistic endeavour. Written over the length of Beethoven's creative life – from the early Op 2 dedicated to Haydn to the mighty Op 111, which takes the piano into the realms of pure imagination – these works constitute the “New Testament" of the piano repertoire.

Michael returned to New Zealand after his spectacular sweep of prizes from three of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions – the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (1973), the Leeds Competition (1975), and the Tchaikovsky Competition (1982) – to devote his creative energies to the music of his native land. Constantly in demand to perform with our finest orchestras and chamber ensembles (including his regular CMNZ tour with the winners of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition), Michael has also added solo recitals to his repertoire with recent performances of the Goldberg and Beethoven Diabelli Variations.

Michael returns to Beethoven at the very height of his powers.

    Dunedin Sound: Some Disenchanted Evening
    ISBN: 9781869538958
Title: Dunedin Sound: Some Disenchanted Evening
    Author: CHAPMAN IAN

Within the colourful, cut-throat, ever-evolving world of popular music, New Zealand's southern-most university city, Dunedin, achieved what numerous other music-rich locations around the globe could only dream of: international recognition of its own sound. Like the Mersey Beat, the Nashville Sound or the Seattle Sound, the Dunedin Sound is known and respected the world over.

Equally revered are the bands involved, such as The Clean, The Chills, The Verlaines and may others you will encounter in this salute to Dunedin's finest. Kicked off by the inimitable punk-infused force that was The Enemy in the late 1970s, and carried to the world throughout the 1980s and beyond in true seat-of-the-pants style by the Flying Nun record label, nobody could have foreseen the huge impact and lasting legacy that a pool of young songwriters and musicians from unfashionable Dunedin would create. Within these pages their extraordinary feat is revisited with the stories and select discographies of an array of bands, and critiques and reminiscences from band members, fans and those in the music scene. The Dunedin Sound is celebrated with a veritable feast of photographs and memorabilia, many of which have never been seen before.

    Dunedin Soundings: Place & Performance
    ISBN: 9781877578229
Title: Dunedin Soundings: Place & Performance
Author: BENDRUPS DAN & DOWNES GRAEME EDS

New Zealand's 'Dunedin Sound' of the 1980s is a phenomenon known throughout the world. But what does Dunedin music-making sound like in the 21st century? Dunedin Soundings features diverse and interesting essays from musicians, composers, and scholar/practitioners who discuss: genres as diverse as brass band, opera, classical, Indonesian gamelan, jazz, rock, and more * the intricacies of the composition and lyric writing processes * digital remixing * scoring for film and television. Together, they reveal the ways in which these supposedly separate music fields have the potential to inform and stimulate each other. The theoretical idea behind the book is that performance and composition practices constitute a process of research. The writers are practitioners who are recognized nationally and internationally for their contributions to New Zealand music across genres, including composer Anthony Ritchie, the Verlaines' Graeme Downes, Emmy award nominee Trevor Coleman, and Refuel and Dunedinmusic.com founder Scott Muir. This book is for everyone with a serious passion and wide-ranging intellectual curiosity for music.

Erewhon Calling: Experimental Sound in Nz
    ISBN: 9780473217662
Title: Erewhon Calling: Experimental Sound in Nz
    Author: RUSSELL BRUCE ED

Erewhon Calling is a survey of how a bunch of antipodean misfits and malcontents have forged new ways and new reasons to make noise, here at the end of the earth. Edited by Bruce Russell (the Dead C.), in association with Richard Francis and Zoe Drayton; the aim of this volume is to survey the full range of ‘non-standard’ audio practices in contemporary NZ culture. The book’s remit runs from the borders of composed art music, through improvised noise, to deconstructed ‘rock’n pop filth’; and every genre, every scene, every permutation of unconventional audio practice in-between.

The aim is not to be comprehensive (there is literally too much vitality and diversity for any book!). The hope is to ‘throw a good handful of gravel into the pool’. While not every eel will have been hit, the surface will have been rippled from shore to shore, which is more than anyone else has even attempted before. Erewhon Calling makes room for many voices, allowing multiple and possibly conflicting voices and points of view. A range of artists and informed commentators mainly tell their own stories, describe their own work, and outline their own goals in working on the fringes of audio culture. The readers of this important new source book will be able to discern their own meanings and make their own connections from this thought-provoking and unique publication.

Finding Language: the Massey University Composer Addresses
    ISBN: 9781776561087
Title: Finding Language: the Massey University Composer Addresses
Author: BROWN MICHAEL MEEHAN NORMAN & HOSKINS ROBERT EDS

From 1995 to 2006, eight New Zealand composers were invited to give an annual public address at Massey University: John Ritchie,
Edwin Carr, David Farquhar, Jack Body, Lyell Cresswell, John Cousins, John Rimmer and Chris Cree Brown. The music of the
‘father of New Zealand composition’, Douglas Lilburn, formed the subject of a ninth address by pianist Margaret Nielsen.
Finding Language collects together all the Massey Composer Addresses for the first time. The addresses show some of our most
prominent musical practitioners reflecting, in their own words, upon their creative practices, formative influences, the role of
composers in New Zealand society, and other concerns close to their hearts. The results are a fascinating compendium of views on
New Zealand art composition in the twentieth century and beyond.
Included in Finding Language: The Massey Composer Addresses are the original overviews of each composer’s work by series convenor
Robert Hoskins, together with new afterwords, bibliographic resources, and an introduction. An essential sourcebook for all students
and aficionados of New Zealand art music, as well as those interested in the development of the arts in this country.
Michael Brown works as Curator, Music at the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington. He has written on various aspects of New
Zealand music and culture. In 2015, he collaborated with artist Mat Tait on the graphic fiction The Heading Dog Who Split in Half:
Legends and Tall Tales from New Zealand (Potton & Burton, 2015).
Norman Meehan is a Wellington-based composer, pianist, writer and teacher. His many releases include five collaborations with the
vocalist Hannah Griffin and Bill Manhire and other poets. He is the author of Time Will Tell: Conversations with Paul Bley, Serious
Fun: The Life and Music of Mike Nock and New Zealand Jazz Life.
Robert Hoskins is a retired academic. He is the series editor of a number of musical projects and has published on colonial balladry,
eighteenth-century English music, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Pacific writings. His most recent book is Memories of Early Years:

    Goneville: a Memoir
    ISBN: 9781927249543
    Title: Goneville: a Memoir
    Author: BOLLINGER NICK

In his award-winning memoir, New Zealand writer and musician Nick Bollinger talks with complete candour about his unorthodox childhood, his obsession with music, the impact of a family tragedy, and the journey that would decide the course of his life. Bollinger was just 18 when he went on the road with the band Rough Justice and its smoky-voiced, charismatic leader Rick Bryant. The next two years were sometimes uplifting and exciting, other times enervating and depressing. It was the 1970s and pot was plentiful. Often, though, the band was short of other things: money, food, shelter, and petrol for its increasingly ramshackle, broken-down bus.

Goneville is both a coming-of-age story and an intimate look at the evolving music scene in '70s New Zealand. It shows how this music intersected - sometimes violently - with the prevailing culture, in which real men played rugby, not rock. Nick Bollinger draws on his own experiences, seeks out key players and unsung heroes and vividly portrays a divided country, set to shatter apart for a generation.

    Author: GRIGG SIMON

Pauly Fuemana of the group Otara Millionaires Club (OMC) was the charismatic singer and creator, with producer Alan Jansson, of the hit record How Bizarre. After the record's release in 1995 it stormed to number one in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and European countries and Fuemana appeared twice on Britain's top-rated TV show Top of the Pops. It was named Single of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards and remains the country's most internationally successful indie record of all time, having sold over 4 million copies and appeared on at least 100 compilations.

Despite the song's phenomenal success, Fuemana was deeply troubled and found fame hard to handle. His friend, mentor and music publisher Simon Grigg gives a riveting blow-by-blow account of the singer's life and the song's beginnings, runaway success, and effect on Fuemana and the people around him. Along the way there are fascinating and often shocking insights into the ruthlessness of the music industry. This is an inside story never told before.

Title: If I Only Had Time the Autobiography
    Author: ROWLES JOHN

John Rowles had the popular music world at his feet in Britain in 1969. Managed by Peter Gormley, the same man who ran Cliff Richard's career, Rowles had two hits in the British top 20, 'If I Only Had Time' and 'Hush Not A Word To Mary'. Forty years later John admits that if had stayed in the UK he could have laid the base for a multi-million dollar career. But homesick for the sun, the 21-year-old Kiwi gave it all up for Hawaii in 1970, and signed up as a caberet star at the famous Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki Beach. It had been a sensational rise for the kid from Kawerau who left home at 15 to play guitar. Basing himself in Hawaii, John's stellar career continued with regular trips all over the USA and appearing on television. He travelled back and forth to New Zealand and Australia regularly and released numerous albums, featuring best-selling hits such as 'Cheryl, Moana Marie' and 'Tania'. Following a highly successful Farewell Tour of New Zealand where he performed over 25 sold out two-and-a-half hour shows with his six-piece band, John Rowles recalls a lifetime of achievements in his highly illustrated autobiography. He speaks candidly to Angus Gillies about the highs and lows of his professional and personal life.

Title: In Love With These Times: The Flying Nun Story
    Author: SHEPHERD ROGER

The inside story of New Zealand's iconic independent record label by the man who made it happen. I wanted to be more than just an observer. I wanted to be a part of what was going on. I had told someone and the word was out, and now I had to actually do this thing. Start a record label. I must have been drunk. Roger Shepherd was working in a Christchurch record shop when he realised the local bands he loved needed someone to make their records. Flying Nun was born. Those records and the bands that created them them - The Chills, The Clean, Chris Knox and the Tall Dwarfs, The Verlaines, Sneaky Feelings, The Bats, Straitjacket Fits and many more - went on to define an era and create what became known as "the Dunedin Sound". In truth it was less a unified sound than a spirit of adventure and independence that characterised the Flying Nun ethos. In this long-awaited memoir, label founder Roger Shepherd describes the idealism and passion that drove the project in the first place, the hard realities of the music industry, and the constant tension between art and commerce. Filled with revealing anecdote and insight, this is the definitive insider history of the one of the most innovative and original record labels of the modern era. "Surely the label with the highest quality output per capita in pop history." - Guardian UK. "Something inexplicably special happened in the Southern Hemisphere a quarter of a century or so ago, the ripples still rumbling, and without it, all the music you love today would sound ever so slightly, and indefinably, different." - British comedian Stewart Lee.

Here are 54 of the most charming, scary, funny, and dancing pieces of the piano music of New Zealand’s first years, written by 32 composers over 150 years. Their manuscripts were mostly unpublished – until now.

The earliest of the composers was the extraordinary Baron de Thierry. Fascinated by romantic tales of the voyages of Captain Cook, he bought land in the Hokianga in 1822. Later there were emigres escaping a war in Europe. Some of the pieces were written by children who went on to have marvellous musical careers. Other composers are still very much alive.

The music is suitable for a wide variety of pianists. Some are very easy and can be played by beginners. The pieces become successively more advanced, up to grade 7 level.

Title: Piano Forte Stories & Soundscapes from Colonial Nz
    Author: MOFFAT KRISTINE

The phrase 'colonial New Zealand piano' immediately and inevitably conjures up the image of the grand piano on a deserted beach that is the leitmotif of Jane Campion's 1993 film The Piano: both a powerful symbol of the incongruity of the piano in this context, its status as 'alien' intruder, and a moving testimony to the personal and cultural value of the instrument that accompanied its owner to the far side of the world. Did nineteenth-century European settlers share the fictional Ada McGrath's passionate attachment to her instrument? Was the instrument particularly valued by middle and upper class women, or did it transcend gender and class divides? How did Maori react to the melodies the piano released? Were the sounds it produced, in terms of both sonority and repertoire, affected by the new environment? What kinds of physical places did pianos occupy? This book attempts to answer these questions and in so doing to thus gain an understanding of the place and significance of the piano in colonial New Zealand culture and society.
